Évian's historic festival, which each summer brings together the leading performers on the international classical music scene
Created in 1976 on Antoine Riboud's initiative, the Rencontres Musicales d’Évian quickly became an unmissable summer event. Mstislav Rostropovich, director of the festival for almost 15 years, attracted the world's greatest soloists and orchestras to Évian, bestowing it with exception global prominence. Inaugurated in 1993 to host the festival, La Grange au Lac bears witness to this prestigious past.
The Rencontres came to a close in the year 2000 with the departure of Mstislav Rostropovich, and were replaced by the Escales Musicales for more than ten years. The festival was eventually reborn in 2014 at the initiative of Laurent Sacchi, President of the Évian Resort, along with the Modigliani Quartet and Philippe Bernhard, in charge of artistic direction, who collectively, progressively restored its original spirit. Today, the creation of La Source Vive and the emergence of Les Mélèzes sees the start of a new chapter in the history of the festival, which has been under the artistic direction of Renaud Capuçon since 2023.
Artistic direction: from yesterday...
The legacy of Mstislav Rostropovich
Mstislav Rostropovich made a true impact on the history of the Rencontres Musicales d'Évian. First a guest in the early years, he became the artistic director in 1985 and brought an international reach to the festival. From then on, the world's greatest artists and orchestras flocked to Évian, making this summer event a benchmark of excellence. His charisma, his high standards, and his love for passing on his passion left a lasting legacy on the identity of the Rencontres. Rostropovich's spirit continues to be felt at La Grange au Lac, which was built in 1993 as a tribute to him to become the home of the Rencontres Musicales d'Évian.
... to today
A new momentum with Renaud Capuçon
Having come to know the festival as a young musician in Rostropovich's time, he now carries forward its legacy. Renaud Capuçon became artistic director of the Rencontres Musicales d'Évian in 2023, with the creation of Les Mélèzes in mind, taking over from the Modigliani Quartet and Philippe Bernhard. Under his direction, the Rencontres have hosted spectacular names, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Zubin Mehta in 2023, confirming a high level of artistic ambition. True to the spirit of uniting and sharing, he continues to write the history of the festival, infusing it with his own energy and vision, as La Source Vive and Les Mélèzes emerge, opening up new horizons.
A historic edition
Held from 24th June to 5th July 2026, the Rencontres Musicales d'Évian will present a doubly historic edition: the classical music festival will celebrate its 50th year, and will inaugurate, with its opening concert, La Source Vive, the new concert venue which has taken its place beside La Grange au Lac. For the first time, the programme will unfold across these two venues, marking the start of a new era in the life of the festival and offering audiences an even richer experience.
