BRAHMS Trio for clarinet, cello and piano in A minor Op. 114

When Brahms, who thought he was finished with composing, met Richard Mühlfeld, clarinettist from the Meiningen orchestra, the encounter proved to be very fruitful, as attested to by the trio dating from 1891, which preceded by three years the twin sonatas of opus 120 – two gems also suited to the ample phrasing of the viola, which Guillaume Bellom performs with Timothy Ridout at the start of the festival.  The subtle dialogue of the clarinet with the cello and piano in the trio, as well as its melancholic song intertwining with the keyboard in the sonata, gives rise to a sublime piece.
