BRAHMS String sextet No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 18
It is difficult to speak of Brahms as a beginner, since his first works were already masterpieces. The two sextets, preliminary opuses of his chamber music corpus, already excelled in their balance and gentle light. Twelve high-flying bows come together here, regular Rencontres Musicales d’Évian performers alongside some newcomers: violinists Clara-Jumi Kang and Yamen Saadi, who matured in the orbit of Daniel Barenboim, violist Sara Ferrández, often associated with Mutter’s Virtuosi by Anne-Sophie Mutter and Timothy Ridout, who also honed his skills at the Kronberg Academy. The first sonata for cello and piano, contemporary to the second sextet, promises to be eloquently rendered by the fingers of Yuja Wang and Yo-Yo Ma. For the second sonata, mark your diary for 2nd July.
