BRAHMS Piano quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 26
Brahms first made his name as a pianist, then as a composer, and was inspired by Clara Schumann’s music and friendship. The piano is a constant feature throughout his entire body of work, particularly in his chamber music. This inner voice is magnified here by Yuja Wang in a trio of great thematic richness—an Andante with variations and a whimsical Scherzo and a quartet that is both powerful and intimate. The Chinese pianist is a close stage and recording partner of Gautier Capuçon, who is himself often paired, for Brahms’s Double Concerto, with his brother Renaud, in turn a faithful collaborator of the young Paul Zientara and Daniel Lozakovich. A quintet of soloists in perfect harmony.
