BRAHMS Piano quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60
Brahms first made his name as a pianist, then later, as a composer, and found inspiration in the playing and the friendship of Clara Schumann. The piano permeates his entire oeuvre, particularly his chamber music. This inner voice is elevated here by Yuja Wang in a thematically rich trio, Andante with variations and a whimsical Scherzo, and in a powerful yet intimate quartet, often regarded as his most personal work, begun in the year of his friend Robert Schumann’s death in 1856 and reworked regularly until 1875. The Chinese pianist is a close stage and recording collaborator of Gautier Capuçon, himself often paired for the Brahms Double Concerto with his brother Renaud, who is in turn a regular companion to the young musicians Paul Zientara and Daniel Lozakovich. A quintet of soloists in perfect harmony.
