Bach made no secret of his admiration for the music of his contemporary Vivaldi. He transcribed several of his concertos, entrusted them to different instruments, borrowed his themes, and set dancing the decidedly Italian eloquence that ignites his composition. Both of them love timbres and instruments, their specificities and their diversity, and know how to extract the best expressive qualities from them. So to listen to Bach in relation to Vivaldi certainly evokes a feeling of joy, coherence and harmony. It is also the opportunity for the neighbouring Lausanne ensemble, invited here, to surround themselves with a wonderful range of soloists close to their musical director, heard shortly before performing Brahms' chamber music.
